Native
American Indians knew of this herb’s useful properties long
before the European settlers came to the North American
continent. Often it was featured in their "smoke"
mixtures. Native Americans used lobelia extensively in herbal medicines, and the Cherokee of the
eighteenth century reputedly had an infallible lobelia-based
syphilis cure. Even nowadays, lobelia are used in homeopathic
remedies.
Native
Americans historically have smoked lobelia
as a treatment for asthma. In the 19th century, American
physicians prescribed lobelia to induce vomiting in order remove
toxins from the body. Native Americans used lobelia
to treat respiratory and muscle disorders, and as a
purgative. Today it is used to treat asthma and food poisoning,
and is often used as part of smoking cessation programs. Lobelia
affects your taste buds in that cigarettes begin to taste
more and more unpleasant. Thus, your desire to smoke is
adversely affected. Lobelia
ointment has also been used topically on the chest to relieve
asthma and bronchitis.
Dr.
John Christopher has written, “Lobelia
is a general corrector of the whole system, as it is easily
diffused and able to influence the entire body. Lobelia
is an efficient relaxant, and is believed to be the best
counter-irritant known to mankind. Its action is felt
immediately on the serious, mucous, muscular and nervous
systems, especially the sympathetic nervous systems. As a
powerful antispasmodic, lobelia
is effective in causing immediate relaxation and expansion of
the contracted parts of the respiratory system (bronchial tubes,
esophagus, glottis and larynx). This allows the "breath of
life" (oxygenized blood) to flow freely to the de-energized
tissues. Lobelia's
wonderful healing effects are due to the herb's great ability to
remove obstruction and congestion within the body, especially
the blood vessels. It lessens the depression through the vaso-motor
and strengthens the muscular action of the vessel walls which
propel the blood, and thus promotes health.” Dr. John

In like manner Dr. Richard
Schulze has written, “Alkaloids are one of the most powerful of all plant chemicals!
Not all plants
have them and some, that do, only have a few, but Lobelia ranks very high, having 14 different Alkaloids! And only Opium is higher, having 16 Alkaloids! I am explaining this, so that
you will understand that
even though
we don't know very much about Lobelia
in this country, it has a history as a powerful healing plant, having also been used successfully by the Native Americans! Lobelia is one of the most powerful and versatile herbs, that I know. In my
Clinic, I learned to rely on this herb more than any other! I learned in the first few years of my practice,
that "When in DOUBT, TRY Lobelia!" It
is the greatest herb for Lung problems! I have seen it work with a 100 different Health Problems!” www.healingtools.tripod.com
