TEA TREE OIL EFFECTIVELY KILLS RESISTANT MICROORGANISMS

WESTPORT, June 13, 2000 (Reuters Health) - Tea tree oil, a substance extracted from the leaves of an Australian tree, is effective in killing a variety of resistant microorganisms commonly found in hospitals, British and Australian researchers report in the May 2000, issue of the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. The researchers found that the two chemically different types of tea tree oil, standard and cloned, rapidly killed most organisms in less than 60 minutes. Both oils were found to be more active against methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) than against methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).

Essential Oils Found to Fight Bacteria Fri Feb 15,11:50 AM ET DALLAS (Reuters Health)

"A pair of orthopaedic surgeons report that two essential oils--eucalyptus and tea-tree oil--are surprisingly effective at treating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. The researchers presented their findings...at the 69th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Eugene Sherry of the University of Sydney in Australia said that, applied to the skin of infected wounds an antibacterial wash derived from Eucalyptus radiata and Melaleuca alternifolia--better known as eucalyptus and tea-tree oil--can work when modern antibiotics fail. Essential oils like these are mostly used in aromatherapy, Sherry noted. He said that he used the combination "once a day for several months" in a series of 25 patients with MRSA. "Twenty-two of the infections resolved completely," Sherry reported...In 19 patients, the infections resolved without the use of antibiotics,Sixteen of the infections involved the bone and three had spread to muscle. In addition, 10 of the patients were diabetic, which "makes healing of wounds very difficult," Sherry said in an interview with Reuters Health...Sherry attended a presentation about the antibacterial properties of essential oils and decided to research the subject. He said that he discovered a wealth of 50-year-old research concerning essential oils, but said "all that research was abandoned when modern science discovered antibiotics." When Sherry decided to initiate a trial of eucalyptus and tea-tree oil in MRSA patients, he discovered that Dr. Patrick H. Warnke, an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Kiel in Germany, was pursuing a parallel study. So the two combined their work to produce the 25-patient MRSA study. Warnke said they are now studying an aerosolized version of the compound in laboratory studies of tuberculosis. When they sprayed the compound on tuberculosis cultures "we wiped out TB, killed it, in 40 minutes. No antibiotic does that," Warnke told Reuters Health. Both doctors said that they have received no funding from the makers of the essential oils, nor do they have financial interests in companies producing the substances."

Tea tree oil has been suggested as a possible topical agent with broad spectrum antibacterial properties Dr. Johnathan Hurst M.D. in an e-mail concerning Tea Tree Oil stated: "I just had to send out this to everyone. I want to pass on this incredible story sent to me from a terrific nurse. I have been using Melagel and the Oil for 2 years on bed sores and surgical area, as well as bones, but this is phenomenal. I had always suspected that this rare type of infection would respond to Melaleuca Oil, but have not had the clinical opportunity to try it yet. If you do not have this for first aid in your home, and keep a tube in the car, you are really missing out!

Jonathan Herbst, MD

"Hi Jonathan,
Wanted to pass on some good news..... I had a patient with MRSA (methcillin resistant staphlococcus, a very tough infection resistant to almost all intravenous antibiotics, and strictly quarantined inin the hospital because of the high risk of contagion) and gangrene who had 3rd, 4th, and 5th toes and the lateral side of his foot amputated. The wound was not healing, almost 3/4 of it was black eschar (dead tissue). He uses alternative medicine at home and requested that we treat the wound with nutrition supplement and anything topically that would work...we started the Melaleuca Oil treatment on the foot. Within 5 days, we had viable pink tissue, with some granulation present. He went to his PCP (primary care doctor), who didn't like him using the Melaleuca Oil and changed him to Panafil. Within 3 days, the black eschar on the edges has increased from 2mm to 5mm, the base of the wound also had new black eschar developing. He refused the Panafil treatment and requested that we re-start the Melaleuca Oil, which we did. As before, the wound began to improve, within 3 days. The black eschar borders are now 1mm, there is no longer any black eschar in the base of the wound, we have pink healthy tissue, granulation tissue is present (meaning it is healing in with new healthy tissue). He went to a wound specialist in Portland last Friday, with pictures of the wound before Melaleuca Oil, before and after Panefil. Although he admitted that he didn't know anything about Melaleuca Oil, he was markedly impressed with the results and wrote orders to continue the current treatment. It's also interesting to note, that on admission to the NH, he had no pulse in that foot, he now has a faint pulse. Initially, when I cleaned, and debrided the wound, he had no sensation. Now he has sensation and I almost have to chase him down to clean the wound! We got the results back from his C&S (culture and sensitivity) of the wound...no organisms seen after 10 days of topical treatment with Melaleuca Oil!
